Earthquakes can strike without warning, so it's crucial to be prepared. Knowing what to do during and after an earthquake can save lives and reduce injuries. This guide provides essential safety tips to help you stay safe, whether you're indoors, outdoors, or driving when the shaking starts, and outlines important steps to take in the aftermath to ensure your safety and well-being.
During Earthquake
- Stay Calm: Keep calm & help others
- Find Safety: Try to run safely to the nearest open space which is not surrounded by buildings, trees and overhead power lines but do so with great caution
- Protect Yourself: While inside the building, choose a safe place to protect yourself. Take refuge under a table
- Take Cover: Remember to drop, cover and hold!
After Earthquake
- Stay Safe: Check yourself for injuries
- Examine: Examine all sections of your building
- Check your surroundings: Do not stay inside a room where cracks have developed along the walls and ceiling.
- Aftershocks: Be prepared for additional earthquakes (aftershocks)
- Wait for help: If you are trapped inside a collapsed building, wait patiently for help. Remain calm.
- Beware of rumors: Do not spread rumors or be alarmed by rumors.
